Creative Cubes

Thousand of isolated villages in interior Papua are not interconnected by land, only accessible with nine-seater propeller planes-significantly hindering development as access is difficult and expensive. When Sekolah Lentera Harapan opens in these villages, we also have to send all construction materials for the schools buildings and school supplies by plane.

Knowing how scarce and precious learning supplies are, children, with guidance from their teachers, learn to manage objects around them as learning resources. For example, as seen in the original photo above, fifth-grade students learn to calculate volume in Mathemathics by creating a cube made of stems. Contextual teaching like this makes children enjoy learning even more because the world they see in shcool is the same world they feel when they leave the school building.

Limitations can be obstacles, but if faced with enthusiasm and creativity, obstacles become opportunities to think more critically. These children have no complaints about having limited resources. There is only a strong will and deterimination to pursue their education.
