Yayasan Pendidikan Harapan Papua is a non-profit organization bringing education and healthcare to remote villages in Papa's interior mountainous region, among the most underdeveloped on the planet. Many of these villages have limited contact with the outside world. Yet, the parents desire a better future for thier children through education. The schools established there is often the first form of formal education.
In this original photograph, two mothers carry their babies in noken: a knotted net or woven bag handmade from wood fiber or leaves. The noken signifies how hard women work in interior Papua: they have to hike for hours every day wearing a noken filled with plantation prduce, firewood, babies, and pigs to care for their family.
Parents are very grateful for the presence of Sekolah Lentera Harapan and its qualified and dedicated teachers. Within a few months learning, local Papuan students transition from understanding numbers one to three to undertaking basic mathematics. They have also quickly grasped learning a new language, Bahasa Indonesia, enabling them to read and write. Education gives Papuan parents and children hope for a better future.
Let these mothers' hopes and dreams come true by taking part in building and supporting schools in interior Papua. Together we bring education to those who are most left behind.
